Day 124 ~ How Am I Doing It Exactly....?

I received a text message this morning from a dear friend asking me how I have lost all this weight... today I weighed in (on my scale) at 269.  That is 61 lbs gone! This week I've walked only 3.5 miles... compared to last week's 10+ miles that is not so hot... this morning's walk was 2.28 miles in 47 minutes ~ and I felt great! What was supposed to be a 2-day break became a 5 days in 7 break. I want to be careful not to let this happen again.  My goal is to walk a 15 - 17 minute mile, getting 3 miles in under 50 minutes.

But back to my friend's question: How I've lost the weight.  She doesn't live in North America... but I sent her the Medifast Quick Start Guide, which is an excellent overview with details of what leans and greens are allowed.

I eat 5 MediFast Meal Replacements a day. Sometimes I have an extra shake, or an extra bar. It depends on the day. I'm a lot less hungry now than I was when I started 4 months ago.

I drink 64+ ounces of water a day.  I try to get 32 oz in before I eat my MF breakfast.

I incorporate 5 TB of ground flaxseeds in my diet almost every day.  At least 1 TB every day (delicious in the MF Oatmeal AND it totally helps to thicken it up!)

I have an "Optional" snack just about every day... either celery with peanut butter, a pickle slice (or two), MF Soy Parmesan mini rice cake things, or MF crackers with Laughing Cow or WW cheese triangles.  Some days I have one or two string cheeses in addition to the snack.

April was a big old plateau month... I wasn't exercising, and now with the walking, the scale has started moving back down.

I know I have more condiments than I should. As I get closer to my goal weight, this will probably have to change. Right now I have about 1 1/2 TB of half-n-half in my coffee, with 1 1/2 tsp of sugar free chocolate syrup (Torani). I don't measure or really count the olive oil I put on my veggies before roasting... I saw on Jamie Oliver's show to 'count to 2' while pouring Olive Oil... that works for me. And I don't always use it up. The only spices I'm concerned with are the ones that have a high sodium content... and of course, salt itself.

That is a beginning of how I'm doing it... I've not updated the food log page in ages, but it does give a pretty detailed description of what I was eating and when for the first 3 months.

* * *
245 lbs will be my halfway point. That is 24 lbs away. Seriously, can't remember being that weight... it sounds really bizarre, but the last weight I remember is 282 (passed that mark!), and before that... 155!! I must've been really unconscious for a long time gaining that much weight :-(

* * *
Yesterday I finally bought new trousers! Size 1X (18-20W). They are stretchy knit elastic-waist pants from Catherines... nothing binding... and they're just a titch tighter than I like... but I figure they need to last for another 3 months! I have a pair of 2X capris that don't fit yet -- they're linen-like and not stretchy... and while I can put them on.... I wouldn't wear them out in public, afraid I'd split them somewhere embarrassing if I moved too much *ha!*

In other words, I know I'm not really a size 18-20 yet, but going down to the 1X is a BIG FAT HAIRY DEAL for me right now!! *Happy Dancin' Here!!*

* * *
This week has been hell emotionally. I did a stupid thing, and made a mistake. I own it. I did it. I'm horribly sorry and contrite. I shouldn't have done what I did at the time I did it, and I could have done it differently.

The week has been a horrible, sad, depressing gray week of feeling terrible about something I cannot fix or change, as it was my own deed that put me there.

Being human and not perfect ~ it really is a sucky sucky thing sometimes.  I hardly slept this week, and that was one reason I wasn't able to get up early enough to get a walk in. I hope that time will be the healer it has the reputation for, and now that I've forgiven myself for being human and making a mistake, that I will be forgiven.

But I didn't eat off plan, and I didn't overeat. I'm still losing weight. And that is still my first priority.

Day 99 (!) I'm Back!

Well... not quite two weeks gone, but too long nonetheless.  Sheesh! I almost missed 100 days of Medifast!! Yikes!!

I go to Medifast Clinic tomorrow ~ two weeks ago my blood pressure was 96/48 ~ apparently that is quite low *grins!* I feel absolutely fine.  I was down 14.25 inches since March 2; a total inch loss of 56.5.

Our chorus went to Pasadena, California this past weekend and competed ~ we scored 601 points, which placed us 2nd place overall, and 1st place mid-sized chorus AND created a "Master Director" for our First-Time director! My quartet drove out together, we stayed in a room all together (I've not stayed four in a room in a long long time...), drove back together and still are having a great time.  I'm thrilled!

I haven't been to my doctor yet for blood work, nor have I searched for a new physician. This week. I'll get that started this week.

There is more news, but not quite ready to share with the world yet.

Hubby's Gallbladder and hernia surgery will be Monday ~ and he's been a bit stressed about that... understandably so. I'm glad contest is over and I can put some concentrated focus toward him and the house and what I need to do around here.

Diet-wise I'm good.  I'm a bit bored, but it comes and goes.

My getting up and Getting Exercise Habit has not transpired. *Deep Breath* But I'm not giving up.

Day 58 ~ Down 43 lbs and 42 inches!!

Just another quickie this morning... still trying to iron out the wrinkles in my morning routine... I went to bed at 10:15 pm last night, and woke up on my own at 5am... tried to wait until 6, but nope... which I think is a GREAT thing! So up at 5:15 -- was vacuuming most of the house and done by 6:45 am - walking the dog by 7:15 am, looking at the grocery ads and cutting a few coupons while eating my oatmeal (this is a huge change for when I eat breakfast, and I know I need to eat something within 30 minutes of waking up... but it makes for a LONG day with LONG periods of time in between meals!!).  Gonna hop in the shower by 8:15 - have a dentist appointment for teeth cleaning at 9am -- and a voice student coming over this afternoon -- so have a lot to move/clear from my room before that happens.
* * * * *

Had my body scan yesterday at Medifast -- will scan and post this week on the progress page!  Tomorrow is picture day ... my trousers still aren't falling down, but they're getting SO much closer!  I have friends who are offering me their smaller size clothes -- YAY! and I have a few favorite things that I kept to wear "when I lost weight" and so I'm thrilled that I may be wearing them in a couple months.

wow. 7 lbs away from 50lbs.  I'm really hoping to be 50 lbs down by next MF appointment (March 17). I'm kind of in my routine of what foods I like ~ and the shakes aren't my favorite... BUT I think drinking down my stock of shakes will help me reach that goal this week. Plus the starting of the healthy movement (as FlyLady refers to it!).

I don't like to sweat. I don't like to huff and puff. I don't enjoy looking like a giant reddish purple *I don't know what to call it* which is what I look like when I exercise. I don't like exercising with other people. I don't like talking when I'm walking, I prefer to listen to music or audio download or be alone with my thoughts.

I like being up early and seeing the sunrise. I like walking the dog and just paying attention to him while we're out. I love how I feel when I'm done.
* * * * *

I met with a college buddy yesterday for a couple hours before my MF appointment. She knows who she is, but I'm going to call her "B." She's 5 foot nuthin' and incredibly determined and focused and committed to things once she has made a decision.  Last March we had a talk about losing weight and fitness, and she (who did not appear fat to me) has lost 60 lbs (and I asked her where she was hiding it... because I didn't think she had that much to lose) but even more impressive is her 18% Body Fat (BF)! If I remember correctly, she started out at over 50% BF, and she started working out in June - 5 days a week for an hour.... always some cardio (mostly Zumba now, if I'm remembering right), and weight training every other day.

She's a single mom, raising two daughters who aren't yet teenagers - works a full time job and they got a puppy within the last year.

I'm inspired (I usually am after a conversation with her), and hopeful...  and she was sharing that at the beginning of her working out, she just saw the goal as so incredibly distant and far away and unreachable -- and now, on the other side, she's still amazed she's where she is. The veil has been taken away and she's living more life -- colors are brighter, and life is to be EXPERIENCED and LIVED, not just observed.

From my perspective of her (since knowing her in college) - she's ALWAYS been one who DID THINGS and lived life... very active, willing to work hard, etc... and it is amazing to watch her joyfully discovering a part of her that has been dormant for such a long time.

Thanks so everyone who is sending me positive thoughts, prayers, energy and love. I can FEEL IT!

Day 54 ~ Yesterday was difficult

I was nibbly and munchy almost all day yesterday -- I was out of the house in the afternoon, which helped, but when I got home it was a big struggle.  I kept thinking about Jack in the Box tacos (not for human consumption but I LOVE THEM!)

So, for my own health reference ~ Nutrition Info for Jack in the Box Tacos (2):
Calories: 386
Calories from fat: 203
Total Fat: 22
Saturated: 6
Trans: 1
Cholesterol: 27 mg
Potassium: 406 mg
Sodium: 617 mg
Carbs: 34 g
Dietary Fiber: 3 g
Sugars: 5 g
Protein: 12 g

Here is the Nutritional Guide for Jack's, which has the ingredient list for all menu items... Tacos have quite a bit of soy, and MSG - which I don't have an issue with, but I'm hearing about links to obesity & autism with it in our foods.  MSGTruth.org seems to be a site that has quite a bit of non-inflammatory information (if you know what I mean, the content and site design are not over the top).

Two hours later, I've read almost everything on the MSGTruthout site, and think it is well worth the time.

My new habit in May/June will be Square Foot Gardening... and when I'm done with MF, I'll be a juicer.

And I hadn't heard about Max Gerson and his cancer therapy through diet (nope, hadn't even heard about the coffee enemas...).  So on my viewing list: The Beautiful Truth and Dying To Have Known... just to see what that is all about.
* * * * *

As someone who lives an "Ostrich" life (stick my head in the ground and ignore any danger and it goes away, right?), I believe that there is some truth to accusations made that the Mighty American Dollar (profits!) is the bottom line cause for so many issues ~ and that most of us don't really educate and inform ourselves on some of these topics (for whatever reasons) regarding what is being put into our food and water supply. At least, I have been so guilty.

Genetically Modified Foods... who knows what the ramifications of it will be down the line (of course, when the world ends in 2012 it won't matter... *sly wink*), and I think there is more information to be learned on it.

Food. Clothing. Shelter.
Everything else is just that - everything else.

I'm not a radical about anything, my view is balance (harmony ♪ ♫) is what we should be striving for... balanced profit, balanced living, balanced eating, balanced work and play... and based on our individual need.  Like all diets are not for everyone -- lifestyle and choices of where we put our energy are not the same for everyone -- but should balance out in the end -- over the scope of a timeline.

Right now, I'm not in balance with eating because I was so far out of balance for so many years: in overeating and eating when I wasn't hungry and eating to disguise emotions.  I now am having to cut way back and a part of me is really bothered by the amount of processed 'diet' food I'm consuming -- but I brought myself to this place; and if it takes however long to be on this 'lack' side of the eating pendulum... well, okay then! I accept it. I accept my responsibility in getting to this point, and now suffer the consequences of eating a 800-1,000 calories a day with no fruit.  But there is light at the end of the tunnel, and I'm so INCREDIBLY thankful that I'm in the process of losing the excess. When MF ends, I will be back in balance, and am doing things NOW to help keep that balance when I go back to 'normal' - whatever that is.

Being so focused on this for two months is really really. r e a l l y ! cool.

I'm incredibly blessed, and incredibly thankful.

Day 44 ~ It Looks Like Rain in the Arizona Sky!

I'm sniffly and sneezy... so the garlic came out this morning -- along with extra Vitamin C and Echinacea!  Lots of water, and two more hours of sleep should help!

Feeling good ~ my scale showed down .2 lbs this morning!

This is just a quickie morning post, have to head off to work.  More to Come
* * * * *

Whew. I feel like I just walked off a cliff of discouragement and dismay.  I think I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with the fact that I seriously need another job ~ and the prospects are slim!

The job websites are all showing sales, retail, call center or "WORK FROM HOME!" - bleh.

So I started composing a letter to send to Senior Communities in the area to go and sing for them ~ which has brightened my spirits considerably.

Dang -- those feelings are dangerous... I've not had my Lean & Green yet, and I'm HUNGRY... but feeling all down and under keeps any kind of motivation far away -- and if I don't have a plan, I'll be Done For!  And today I didn't have a plan -- I have zukes, some kale, some romaine, some cottage cheese, some fat-free cheese, some scallions, some broccoli and cauliflower ~ so I can do stuff... plus a tin of diced tomatoes, some chicken broth (low sodium this time!), and all sorts of ideas... just nothing sounded good.

Himself's van's battery was dead after he fitted his super-spectacular new radio (his Christmas present), and going outside to hang out with it while it ran for 30 minutes after he got it started so he could go back and work... and the fact that I had talked about needing the van tomorrow to take stuff to the Rummage Sale, and how he's not done the things we talked about him doing so I could take the pieces to the Rummage Sale drop off tomorrow... I'm sure those feelings had something to do with how I was feeling.

And the fact I've not taken the tree down doesn't help me feel any better.

What good does it do to say anything? Nothing will change... he'll just be upset, which makes me upset, and I just don't have the emotional tools to really stand up for myself.  Well... I expressed myself, without placing blame, just expressing frustration -- and he's worked really hard all week, and the room is so close to being finished it is within spitting distance! :-)
* * * * *

I'm fixing the Shirataki Noodle Bake which I've modified quite a bit... going to take it out of the oven and take a picture and post it later... while cooking, it tasted delish!

Day 44 ~ Down 37 Pounds!

Today was a MF Clinic Visit -- another Official Weigh In!

I was thinking on my drive home that I should collect something that represents how much weight I've lost and am losing ~ something to build that is a visual image to reinforce just *how much* and *how heavy* 37 pounds (and more) actually *IS!*

hmmm... will have to think about it!

* * * * *

I met my good friend at Mimi's for my Petite Sirloin and roasted veggies... tonight I had a super portion of veggies which included Asparagus! Bonus!! My friend was held up for a little while in traffic, so I had a cup of coffee with hot water added (I'm not a fan of strong coffee), and over 3 cups of diluted coffee I had two little containers of 1/2 & 1/2, and a packet of Splenda.  While waiting for her I also had a Cesar Salad with low-fat Citrus dressing (yuck) on the side, no croutons, and a bit of Parmesan Cheese.  My friend brought along her Ascorbic acid crystals, which was a 'flavoring' she could use when she was having some serious stomach/digestion issues.  It is good stuff! And Good For You! Will have to look for it at the Health Food Store.

I listened to my Happy-Positive-Upbeat Music Playlist on the way home, and think I did a good job... *ha!* All music I like!!

* * * * *

My Quartet did a little Birthday/Valentines Performance on Sunday and we had a blast!

 Aren't we cute?
* * * * *
In other news... we're still waiting on news for my newest niece or nephew... any minute now!

* * * * *
The additional room himself has been working on is starting to come together quite quickly! We're getting ready to paint the ceiling, and will probably be moving furniture in a few weeks.  Very VERY exciting!!

Day 3 - Part II

So much goes through my brain during the day to write here... and then I sit down, faced with the blank screen and go... "eh? what brilliant thing was I thinking?"  I know other bloggers face the same thing... probably the best way to remember would be to record it into the digital voice recorder, because writing it down would take too long and often I'm in the car.  But this isn't what I'm here to tell you.
* * *
Last night I was driving home and thinking about how Someday is Today. "One Day" was Tuesday...!!

Really and Truly... the "Some Days" have turned into Present Day.

I started to cry with a quiet joy when I realized that IT. IS. NOW. Right now. I'm doing what I've been talking about doing for years... it is a commitment (thanks to my step-father and mom's financial support, and my husband's emotional support and financial help) that I have to keep.  I hope this year I'm able to really learn, to really absorb, to truly understand in my core being and soul, that promises made to myself are as important as any promises I make to others.

The train of thought that brought me to tears...
The thought of new pants because my old ones are falling down around me. I can't imagine the day, but in my heart I know that day is not that far away.

and then the tears started to fall.  The feelings are all over the place!
  • Overwhelmed.
  • Joy.
  • Anticipation.
  • Submission.
  • Love.
  • Anxiety (just a tinge of fear of the unknown, but fearful isn't really correct).
  • *Eager.
  • Acceptance.

Time Out for a  Pet Peeve: Eager vs. Anxious.
  • Eager: keen or ardent in desire or feeling; impatiently longing; characterized by or feeling expectancy or great desire
  • Anxious: full of mental distress or uneasiness because of fear of danger or misfortune; greatly worried; solicitous
These are the FIRST definitions... Anxious has come to mean Eager, which is my Pet Peeve.
Thank You for letting me get that off my chest
End of Pet Peeve

I still have to write about Monday -- and I will. In the meantime, I've started a Food Log page, which is where I'll write down what I'm eating, and update it accordingly. I know keeping track and looking back over it can be eye-opening.

Disappointed!

Hard as it is to believe, I had to postpone my Medifast Initial Consultation that was to be today at 4:30pm because of the weather. In Arizona! Which is known for the fabulous winter weather. Today, tonight and tomorrow are all due for hard freezing, and roads have been closed up in Northern Arizona, and while the sun is shining in Southeastern Arizona... the drive back would be later and colder and more dangerous.

Luckily, I was able to arrange to work earlier hours on Monday, and can make an appointment in the early afternoon... which will keep me on schedule for starting the program on Tuesday, January 4th!

*  *  *
20 years ago this month I graduated from Pepperdine University. I had an absolutely amazing college experience; I really really did. I still owe many dollars because of it, and I ponder often where I'd be financially without all the student loan debt. I would not have had some amazing experiences had I gone to a less expensive institution, and so I can't really be objective... Argh! What am trying to say?!

Not that long ago, I used to resent the debt and how (in hindsight I was feeling like) I'd had no real say in where I ended up for college. But, I think I've let that feeling of powerlessness go - and have accepted (like a real grown-up, I think!) my choice as my choice, no blame - and to absolutely be thankful and loving toward everything about that time of life.

Yay! This is kinda a big a-ha realization for me... Woot!! Always nice to let go of negative stuff.

*  *  *
In other news... my employers like me so much they gave me a $2 an hour raise... I don't work that many hours in a week, and it only gives me an additional $52 (pre-tax) extra per month... But Hey! It is a huge raise after only 6-1/2 months, and if I do end up having to move on to obtain a real full-time job, it is a nice percentage of my wage and will look good to possible future employers!

Since I'm going to beginning a new phase of eating and lifestyle -- which some might consider stressful (ya think?!!) ... maybe I can stay for another two months before really having to knuckle down and search for a higher-paying job... in the meantime, perhaps I'll market the singing for senior living facilities thing a bit more strenuously ♪ ♫ ♪ ....
